The iDesign wavefront analyzer is the latest addition to the state-of-the-art technology offered by Stahl Eyecare Experts in Manhattan. The iDesign wavefront analyzers from AMO-VISX offer the most accurate wavefront measurements of any device available for LASIK eye surgery.

Understanding Aberrations

The most common visual disturbances that impact vision are nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. These are more commonly known as lower-order aberrations.

Higher-order aberrations are more complex and are not usually correctable with glasses or contact lenses. Two of the most common higher-order aberrations are spherical aberrations and coma. Higher-order aberrations can cause difficulty seeing at night, glare, halos, blurring, starburst patterns, or double vision.

Before wavefront technology was approved by the FDA in 2002, LASIK surgeons could only measure nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. They were only using the information from your eyeglass prescription.

This means that a patient’s eyes could be corrected but only to the strength of the prescription. Thanks to wavefront technology, patients can now experience clearer and better vision than ever before! In the early days of LASIK surgery, many patients still complained of symptoms such as glare and halos caused by higher-order aberrations.

What Is Wavefront Technology?

Wavefront technology allows ophthalmologists to measure higher-order aberrations. The iDesign system uses advanced wavefront sensing technology to measure and map eyes with aberrations. The iDesign allows our LASIK doctors at Stahl Eyecare Experts to take microscopically precise measurements of the eye. These precise measurements have greatly increased resolution and image details.

The high-resolution details improve the ability to measure ocular aberrations with accuracy, precision, and greater range. The iDesign creates a custom map of your individual cornea. This provides accurate information about all aberrations, including lower and higher-order aberrations. It collects over 1200 data points and is 25 times more accurate than the information gathered from a prescription.

How Does the Surgeon Use the iDesign System During LASIK?

Using the iDesign system allows our surgeons to measure pre-existing visual aberrations before surgery. This results in patients experiencing clearer and more precise vision thanks to LASIK.

Fortunately, at Stahl Eyecare Experts in Manhattan, we also offer an AMO-VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser system. The AMO-VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser system controls the corneal reshaping performed during LASIK surgery. These two systems are designed to integrate seamlessly with each other. Both systems work together to measure and treat the eye. The wavefront measurements are then sent to the excimer laser.

The AMO-VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser is then programmed so it knows exactly how and where to shape your cornea. This leads to the best possible results for all patients at Stahl Eyecare Experts!

The iLASIK Suite

Benefits of iDesign Wavefront-Guided Technology

These integrated laser systems mean lower risk and less recovery time for you. The difference between standard LASIK and wavefront-guided LASIK can be seen best in visually challenging situations.

This is especially apparent at night or in a dark environment.  Wavefront-guided LASIK surgery has been approved for military fighter pilots and NASA astronauts. These are individuals who always need superior vision.

Minimizing glare or halos when driving at night can make a real difference when it comes to your safety. Contact the LASIK surgeons at Stahl Eyecare Experts in Manhattan to see if you are a candidate for this amazing surgery!
